Puur Abstracten
Dit is geen restcategorie, maar een verzameling van de resultaten van bewuste experimenten. Landschapsabstracten verwijzen, alleen door hun benaming al, naar de bestaande werkelijkheid, en dat bepaalt mede de keuze van hun medium en kleur: gouache voor de zanderigheid van de duinen, aquarel voor de vochtigheid van het wad. Pure abstracten verwijzen niet, ze zijn niet meer èn niet minder dan medium, kleur en compositie. Dat komt tot uiting in de naam die ik deze categorie geef : ‘niet minder dan’ geeft ‘puur’, ‘niet meer dan’ wordt ‘just’. Ik laat hier oefeningen zien met één enkele kleur, zoals de twee ‘eigen grijzen’ die gemengd zijn uit primaire en secundaire kleuren; of in wat de mogelijkheden zijn van een bepaald medium, als de abstracte aquarellen; of in wat er gebeurt als ik twee kleuren van verschillende dikte met elkaar uitgiet.
Just Abstracts
Just Abstracts’ are not just a leftover-category, but a collection of the result of conscious experimentation. Landscape abstracts refer, if only by their title, to our visible reality, which plays a role in the choice of their medium and colour – gouache for the sandiness of the dunes, watercolour for the wetness of the wetlands. Just abstracts do not refer, they are no more and no less than medium, colour and composition. This ‘no less than’ comes out in the ‘pure’ in their dutch title, the ‘no more than’ in the ‘just’ here. I show experiments with a single colour, like the two grey paintings mixed from primary and secondary colours; or what a specific medium can do when used in abstract painting, as shown in the watercolour abstracts and the fingerpaint abstracts, or what happens when I pour out two colours of a different consistency.
